Sustainable Growth

Petuna fully understands and accepts its responsibility to help maintain Tasmania’s pristine marine environment for decades to come and it is in our commercial best interest to do so.

Protecting Our Environment

Macquarie Harbour is a body of water six times the size of Sydney Harbour. Salmon farming represents around three per cent of the total Harbour area.

Maintaining the integrity of such a pristine environment and limiting the impact on the natural ecosystem is critical to Petuna. We use responsibly sourced fish feed, use industry best technology to prevent our fish escaping into the wild and we stock our marine farms at some of the lowest densities in the world.

We have developed sophisticated environmental modelling and monitoring programs for our Macquarie Harbour marine farming operations to ensure current and future development in the harbour is sustainable.

International Best Practice in Biosecurity

Petuna and Tassal are working collaboratively on identifying best international-standard farming practices to better manage Macquarie Harbour from an environmental, animal welfare and biosecurity perspective.

The ongoing discussions are an important and positive step for the Tasmanian aquaculture industry, with the potential to make significant improvements to the way we do things.

Any commercial collaboration will operate in strict accordance with state and federal legislation.

Future Exploration & Expansion

Market demand for Tasmania’s premium aquaculture products means there is the opportunity to expand, provided of course the community’s social and environmental expectations are met.
